Sicily by Steve McCurry

Quintessentially Italian, Sicily is a romantic’s paradise: winding passageways connect quaint piazzas, bright Mediterranean flora overspills iron balustrades and medleys of pastel-hued buildings merge to form picturesque communes. From the island’s coast to the cobbled streets of mountaintop towns, each face of Sicily speaks of history, culture and character. It was here that Steve McCurry developed a love for rustic Italy when he visited a number of the island’s most alluring spots with Silversea.

The scenic town of Ragusa, which brims with cultural heritage and enjoys a defined sense of tradition, retains a relaxed pace of life that has characterized the settlement for decades. McCurry made it his subject, as he delved into the depths of Sicily’s charm. The legendary photographer climbed Ragusa’s worn stairways, shook hands with the locals and indulged his fondness for Italian cuisine. He was welcomed so invitingly, in true Sicilian style, wherever he went; hospitality on the island is second to none. Restaurateurs welcome guests as if friends reuniting.

One sun-drenched afternoon, beneath a canopy of terracotta roofs, McCurry was introduced to a local artist who specialized in the age-old custom of Sicilian cart painting. The photographer gained privileged access to the painter’s studio, which resembled a movie set thanks to its typical Italian decor. Much like the young man’s painted antiques, McCurry’s photographs tell the beautiful story of a refined culture and go some way in capturing the essence of the Mediterranean. That which escapes his frame must be experienced first-hand!
